Yesterday morning we were out planting garlic when we heard a rattling call from overhead that could mean only one thing: sandhill crane. Oddly, it was one lone crane, its wide wings taking it on lazy loops through the low-slung gray clouds. Work ceased until the graceful bird was out of sight, its presence captivating.
We had a few greens to harvest this weekend, but the cold weather and short days have certainly slowed plant growth. The notable exception is watching the garlics sprout that were planted just weeks ago.
Collards, kale, watermelon radishes, and tat soi are the next items awaiting harvesting. With some sun and warmer days, hopefully we will begin harvesting them in the next week or two.
